How quickly the tables can turn.

A day after Hawaii roughed up Pepperdine for a season-high 15 runs, the Waves bounced back to crush the Rainbow Warriors 16-1 on Friday, evening the four-game series at Eddy D. Field Stadium in Malibu, Calif.

Chris Lambert homered, drove in three runs and reached base five times; and catcher Kolten Yamaguchi added three hits and two RBIs for the Waves (5-5), who had 10 straight batters reach base with two outs in the second inning.

Hawaii starter Quintin Torres-Costa (0-2) saw his ERA climb to 10.22 in the shortest outing of his career. He allowed eight runs on five hits and four walks, and hit two batters in 12⁄3 innings.

The ‘Bows (5-6) tied the worst loss in Mike Trapasso’s 14 years as head coach, matched only by a 17-2 defeat to Arizona State in April 2009.

"It’s no secret that when you walk nine guys and hit four and give up 13 freebies, you’re going to get boat-raced and that’s exactly what happened," Trapasso said. "I don’t think (Torres-Costa) ever really had it. Even in the first inning he was struggling with his command."

Matt LoCoco broke up Jackson McClelland’s no-hitter with a two-out double in the sixth inning and scored on Jacob Sheldon-Collins’ base hit for UH’s only run.

Sheldon-Collins had two of Hawaii’s four hits.

McClelland (2-0) had gone 18 2⁄3 innings without giving up a run to start the season. He went eight innings and allowed three hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

Hawaii used three different relievers, with senior Eric Gleese faring the best. Gleese allowed two hits in two shutout innings with one walk and two strikeouts.

Alex Hatch relieved Torres-Costa and walked the first two batters he faced. He finished with four walks and six hits allowed in 3 1⁄3 innings, giving up five runs (four earned).

Lawrence Chew allowed three runs on four hits with two strikeouts in the ninth inning.

The 16 runs UH gave up were the most since a 17-4 loss to Cal State Fullerton in April of last year.

"You have the 13 freebies and then you throw on top of that a ton of hits because none of our guys were able to throw anything for strikes other than the fastball, and even the fastball they struggled with," Trapaso said.

Hawaii was without starting second baseman Stephen Ventimilia, who injured his knee in Thursday’s win.

Ventimilia, who missed two games of the Hofstra series with the flu, will see a doctor on Saturday. If it’s determined he needs an MRI, he will fly back to Hawaii on Monday and miss the rest of the road trip.

In eight games, he’s hitting .286 with three doubles, a triple and six runs scored.

"He was pretty sore," Trapasso said. "There’s no telling right now. We’ll see the doctor (Saturday) and go from there."

Freshman J.J. Kitaoka started in his place and went 0-for-3.

Senior Kaeo Aliviado went hitless in three at-bats before he was lifted for a pinch hitter in the ninth inning to end his hitting streak at six games.

Ten different Waves had hits and 11 different Pepperdine players scored.

Since giving up one run in six innings to Oregon to start the season, Torres-Costa has allowed 14 runs and 14 hits in 61⁄3 innings with six walks across two outings.

"We’ll get through this series like we do every series and sit down and take a look at the next series and go from there," Trapasso said. "Obviously we know that we can’t be walking guys and not throwing our secondary pitches for strikes if we’re going to be successful. We believe in Quintin and know that he’s better than that."

Junior L.J. Brewster (2-0, 2.19 ERA) will start Saturday’s game that begins at 11 a.m.
