Search for hiker will resume
Honolulu firefighters will resume the search Sunday for a missing hiker who reported he was on the off-limits Haiku Stairs.
Fire Inspector Kendall Ching said 17 firefighters were dispatched at about 6 a.m. Saturday to search the stairs, also known as the Stairway to Heaven, after the 17-year-old Hawaii island boy did not return from his hike on Friday.
Ching said the teen was last heard from on social media at about 3:30 p.m. Friday and indicated he was on the stairs, which have been closed for almost 30 years.
Hawaii News Now identified the hiker as Daylen Pua.
A helicopter landing zone was set up at Kaneohe District Park.
A fire helicopter dropped five firefighters at the top of the trail, and firefighters also searched the bottom part of the trail in Kaneohe, Ching said.
Ching said no signs of the teen, who had been hiking alone, were found by noon Saturday.
The search was suspended in the afternoon due to poor weather.
