By Ewa Beach standards, it was a cold, drizzly and overcast day, but the Campbell baseball team and its fans got a dose of warmth and brightness from senior Ian Kahaloa.
With four major league scouts watching, Kahaloa didn’t give up a hit and struck out 13 of the 19 batters he faced in six innings in Campbell’s 8-0 victory over Waianae in an OIA season-opening game.
Had he come out to pitch the seventh inning, he likely would have finished with a no-hitter. Instead, sophomore reliever Markus Ramos finished up the final three outs for the combined no-hitter.
"I threw a lot of innings in the preseason, so I felt (physically) great out there," he said.
Kahaloa’s fastball was clocked at 92-to-93 mph, and all four scouts — from the Yankees, Orioles, Red Sox and Rockies — declined, on orders from their bosses, to speak with the press.
"He’s our horse and we expect him to eat up a lot of innings this year in the regular season," Sabers coach Rory Pico said. "In the playoffs, if we make the playoffs, he will play an important role, whether as a starter or reliever. He’s been throwing well."
Kahaloa is a University of Hawaii commit, if he goes the college route. All 30 Major League Baseball teams have scouted him.
"His breaking ball was working well and he was spotting it" Campbell catcher Tryzen Patricio said. "His fastball was painting wherever I put my glove."
Kahaloa also went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.
The Campbell batters made life a lot easier for the whole squad with six runs on five hits in the first inning off of Waianae starter Thomas Kaauwai. Keola Himan’s two-run triple to center was one of the big blows.
"I was wondering what the team would be like in a real game and I thought they were a little anxious and quiet to start," Pico said. "When we put up a bunch of runs, it definitely settled them down."
Pico said the scouts have been coming to practice and some went to the Sabers’ preseason games on Maui to watch Kahaloa.
Blayze Arcano-Llacuna tripled and scored on Himan’s sacrifice fly in the third. Kahaloa’s run-scoring double in the fourth finished the Campbell scoring.
Aside from the first inning, Waianae held tough.
"We knew we would get Ian because Campbell has a bye on Saturday," said Walter Grilho, the Seariders’ first-year head coach who spent 17 years as an assistant. "We tried our best to prepare and set the (pitching) machine in the 90s. We worked on the hitters getting their front side down to be able to load before the pitch comes. But that machine doesn’t give the same movement on the ball that a pitcher does.
"We’re going to be OK. Sometimes you run into games like this. We’ve improved by leaps and bounds since the preseason."
Kahaloa didn’t walk a batter and Campbell committed one error. Waianae grounded out three times and two of their batted balls reached the outfield.
