Moanalua High duo wins again
Moanalua High juniors Kyosuke Hara and Shawn Lu put together seven birdies and an eagle in Saturday’s opening round and held on Sunday to defend their Hawaii State Golf Association Four-Ball Stroke Play Championship at Ted Makalena Golf Course.
Hara and Lu finished at 15-under-par 127 to beat former University of Hawaii golfers David Saka and Nainoa Calip by one. The teams were tied at 14 under after Hara/Lu double bogeyed the 13th Sunday — their only over-par hole in the tournament. Hara birdied the 16th and pars on the final two holes clinched it.
Saka and Calip shot 64 both days. Spencer Dunaway and Lorraine Char were another shot back.
Last year, Hara and Lu edged Menehune teammates John Oda and Brent Grant for the title.
Lance Hashimoto and David Watanabe (67–136) won A flight by one and Elmer Tadly and Jared Yamamoto captured B flight (73–140) by seven. Tadley had a hole-in-one Saturday.
Hara and Lu are playing in the Hawaii State Amateur Stroke Play Championship, next week (March 12-15) at Pearl Country Club. Punahou junior Kyle Suppa, who made the cut at this year’s Sony Open in Hawaii, will defend his title.
The field also includes Kaiser High freshman Malia Nam, Marvin Rositzki from Germany, Tatsuya Isomori from Japan and Nick Ushijima from California.
Manoa Cup champions Brandan Kop and Jonathan Ota are competing in the new mid-amateur (25-older) flight. There is also a senior (55-older) flight, which will play Thursday, Friday and Sunday.
The open and mid-amateur flights play 72 holes, with a 36-hole cut after Friday’s second round. Next Sunday’s final round begins at 11:20 a.m. off the first and 10th tees.
First Tee tees off again
First Tee of Hawaii is starting this year’s second series of 10-week sessions the end of this month at 14 sites around the state. The sessions incorporate educational programs and golf instruction to "build character, instill life-enhancing values and promote healthy choices through the game of golf."
First Tee is also selling the 2015 Ambassador Card to raise money for its programs. Owners of the card can play 18 Oahu courses for $30 each, including cart. Courses include Ewa Beach, Royal Kunia, Turtle Bay, Kapolei, Royal Hawaiian, Pearl Country Club and Hoakalei.
The card costs $100 and is good until the end of the year. The $30 rate is good once during the year at each course and there are tee time restrictions.
