Rothman named No. 1 big wave surfer
The North Shore’s Makua Rothman was named the World Surf League’s top surfer in the world based on points earned during the WSL’s 2014 Big Wave Tour.
The 30-year-old Rothman finished the season with 20,833 points, more than 7,000 ahead of Peru’s Gabriel Villaran. Kailua’s Kohl Christensen was 13th with 3,070 points.
KIRA SUP racing continues Saturday
The Aloha GasSUP, Kanaka Ikaika Racing Association’s final event before its Oahu championship later this month, is Saturday from Maunalua Bay to Magic Island.
The 11-mile event is a designated stand-up paddleboard race for points in the Maui Jim Waterman’s Series. There is a $720 purse for the SUP division.
The race begins for SUP and prone paddleboards at 9 a.m. with a 10 a.m. start for all other divisions: OC-6, OC-3, OC-1, surfski and V-1. Check-in and late registration is from 7:30 to 9 a.m. Saturday at Maunalua Bay.
Robinson Senior Classic is Saturday
The Geremy Robinson Senior Classic high school basketball games are Saturday at Moanalua High School gym.
The girls game will start at 3:30 p.m., with the boys game to follow. A slam dunk and 3-point shooting contest will be held after the boys game. Doors open at 2:45 p.m. Admission is $10.
