Senior Pono Anderson allowed five hits in a complete-game effort and John Kea hit a bases-clearing triple to lead Saint Louis past ‘Iolani 9-4 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu opener for both teams at Les Murakami Stadium on Friday night.
Anderson, who signed to play for Hawaii next season, struggled at times with his command and finished with four walks and four strikeouts in a 101-pitch effort.
“I shouldn’t have walked anyone actually,” Anderson said. “After I fall behind in the count, I should be able to get myself back up and get out of it.”
Anderson is one of three ILH players who signed to play for UH next season.
‘Iolani’s Pikai Winchester, who played last Saturday in the boys basketball state final against Kalaheo, will join Anderson and Kamehameha’s Kekai Rios at UH next season.
Winchester went 0-for-2 with an RBI as the designated hitter in his first game after missing all of the preseason.
The defending champion Crusaders returned four starting position players from last year’s state final.
Ryder Kuhns went 2-for-4 with a double and Travis Tanaka had two hits and scored twice.
