Wahine water polo team beaten at buzzer
The No. 6-ranked University of Hawaii women’s water polo team dropped its opening conference match Saturday in a thrilling 7-6 loss to No. 8 Cal State Northridge at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex.
Down 6-5 and with time running out, sophomore Chloe Barr scored for the Rainbow Wahine with five seconds left to tie the match. After a timeout, CSUN’s Madeline Sanchez lobbed a shot in at the buzzer to end it.
Senior Emily Carr and junior Paula Chillida Esforzado led Hawaii (7-5, 0-1 Big West Conference) with two goals each. Kelcy Barott had a match-high three goals for the Matadors (11-8, 1-0).
Chaminade women split doubleheader
The Chaminade softball team split a doubleheader with No. 20 Cal Baptist on Saturday, winning Game 1, 4-3, but losing the second 15-1 in five innings at Central Oahu Regional Park.
In the opener, the Silverswords (3-13, 2-6 PacWest) rallied from a 3-0 deficit and won it in the seventh when Elia Lizarraga scored from second on Sierra Mendiola’s walk-off single into right field.
Former Rainbow Wahine pitcher Loie Kesterson was charged with the loss, while Brett Aspel got the win.
The Lancers (19-5, 8-2) broke open the second game by scoring 10 times in the third.
» A three-run homer in the first inning by pitcher Danielle Wilson propelled the Hawaii Hilo softball team to a 9-1 win in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday against visiting Azusa Pacific.
Brittany Huff went 3-for-3 with two RBIs to support Wilson, who improved to 5-3.
Destinee Levesque scattered eights hits as the Cougars (11-13, 5-8 PacWest) won the second game 3-0.
Colleen Aubrey had three hits for the Vulcans (12-7, 7-2).
Sharks improve to 5-0 in men’s tennis
The Hawaii Pacific men’s tennis team defeated a Division I opponent and remained unbeaten Saturday, downing UM-Kansas City 5-2 at the UH Tennis Complex.
The Sharks (5-0) swept doubles play, and Maik Burlage, Marko Lenz, Yann Renault and Thibaud Berland won their singles matches.
UH athletics staff members to speak
Three members of the University of Hawaii athletics department will be the guest speakers Monday at the Honolulu Quarterback Club luncheon at the Maple Garden Restaurant.
John McNamara, associate director, external affairs; men’s volleyball coach Charlie Wade; and Don Bailey, the UH football team’s new offensive coordinator, will address the club and field questions.
The restaurant is at 909 Isenberg St. Lunch is at 11:30 a.m., followed by the program at noon. The luncheon cost is $15 per person for members and guests.
