Hula. Ha‘a. Haka. Haku.
Heck of a senior night.
Of all the final regular-season celebrations going on around the country Saturday, the last one held had no rival.
Guaranteed.
Think anyone else received a korowai, a traditional Maori feathered cloak?
Doubtful.
But that is what a season-high Stan Sheriff Center crowd of 3,491 — the largest since some 5,000 came for senior night in 1998 — witnessed as part of the impressive sendoff for Big West champion Hawaii (22-7, 14-2). Before cutting down the net to mark their first outright conference title in 17 years, the Rainbow Wahine reciprocated with their 14th consecutive victory, a 61-38 dismantling of Cal State Fullerton.
Led by a resurgence of its 3-point shooting game and a stifling defense that held the Titans (11-18, 5-11) without a basket for 13 minutes, Hawaii simply dominated on both ends of the court and from behind the arc. Senior guard Ashleigh Karaitiana set the tone 22 seconds in with what would be the first of seven 3-pointers, the first treys in three games, and the Rainbow Wahine rolled for most of the contest.
"This was all for the seniors, getting this win," said junior guard Destiny King, scoring seven of her nine points in the first half as Hawaii took a 34-17 lead and never looked back. "This was so beautiful, all the culture and all the crowd. It was awesome."
It was a night that celebrated the culture and diversity of its players, Hawaiian for Shawna-Lei Kuehu and Maori for the New Zealand-born Karaitiana.
"It was a great way to share our cultures, show the Polynesian part of the school and this program," said Karaitiana’s father, Hoani, who led the postgame Moari haka with son Kyaz. "This is unique to this place."
It was special how Hawaii has played all season, sharing minutes and points. There were times Saturday when turnovers weren’t caused by sloppiness but by trying to get everyone to score.
Consider that Hawaii had 16 assists on its 23 field goals, with 10 of the 13 Rainbow Wahine finishing with at least two points, led by reserves Bri Harris and Dalayna Sampton each with 10. The only one not to play at least six minutes was injured senior guard Morgan Mason, who started the game ceremoniously; Kuehu made sure she won the tip and immediately called timeout so that Mason could be replaced by Marissa Wimbley.
Karaitiana’s 3-pointer came seconds later, followed by one of the few scoring runs by the Titans. Fullerton led 6-5 and then it was over, with another trey from Karaitiana giving Hawaii the lead for good at 8-6 with 14:40 left.
By the time Kuehu had moved into eighth place all-time in career scoring with 1,201 points, the Rainbow Wahine were up 21-12. Amanda Tivenius pulled the Titans to 24-17 with 4:09 to go; it would be Fullerton’s last basket until Samantha Logan’s 3-pointer at the 11:09 mark of the second half.
"We’re a defensive team and we didn’t always show it this season," Hawaii coach Laura Beeman said. "We had to re-commit to rebounding and defense, and once we did that, we started to rack up some wins.
"As long as we do that, I think we can be very, very successful. You know, tournament basketball’s very different. It’s not the best team; it’s the best tournament team."
