Elisa Favela scattered six hits and socked a home run as No. 2 Campbell pulled away for a 7-3 win over Leilehua on Tuesday afternoon.
Favela struck out eight and walked none for the complete-game win over a Mules squad that hung close despite committing four errors. That equalled the number of miscues Leilehua had in a 6-4 loss to Kapolei on Saturday.
"That’s two games, pretty much, that we just didn’t take care of the ball," coach Stacy Araki said.
The visiting Sabers went ahead for good in the top of the sixth inning by manufacturing a run. Chardonnay Pantastico walked on four pitches, stole second base, advanced to third on a grounder to short, and then scored on a two-out error by shortstop Tiana Cantero-Kawelo.
That gave Campbell a 4-3 lead, and two of those runs were unearned off Leilehua starter Chelsea Lobitos.
"Leilehua is tough. They’re going far this season," Sabers coach Shag Hermosura said. "(Lobitos) tried to get our timing off. We tried to get her off the mound around the fourth or fifth inning."
In the seventh, the sun finally peeked through the clouds and Lobitos fatigued. She walked Sierra Mariano and Darien Robinson to start the inning, and Ashlyn Yagin, Campbell’s No. 8 hitter, socked a line drive to center field. The ball got past Alo Salausa for a three-run homer.
Favela retired the side in order in the bottom of the seventh, and the Sabers improved to 2-0 in the OIA West. Leilehua dropped to 0-2.
Despite the win, Hermosura wasn’t entirely satisfied.
"Elisa has a lot of power, but she missed a few pitches today," he said. "She has to stay in the game and not overplay herself. Hopefully, she’ll get better."
An eight-K, no-walk performance seems good enough on paper.
"I feel like I was hitting my spots, but I just have to go off-plate more," she said. "My curves were working, but my risers were too high or too low."
The Mules struck gold first with a towering solo shot to deep left-center by Salausa, a left-handed hitting sophomore. They put two more runners on base, but Favela struck out Gwen Naeha to end the inning.
In the top of the second, Kiana Ulufale singled to left, stole second and, with the help of two infield errors, came in to score the tying run.
Favela’s homer to dead center in the third put Campbell ahead 2-1. Her blast carried over the head of the center fielder, Salausa, and reached the hallway of a Kaala Elementary School building more than 300 feet away.
