Truck driver sought in crash that hurt cyclist
Kauai police are looking for the driver of a pickup truck who allegedly left the scene of a traffic accident that seriously injured a motorcyclist Thursday.
The motorcyclist was taken to Wilcox Hospital with serious injuries and then airlifted to the Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu.
The driver of the dark-colored pickup truck did not stop at the scene, which occurred at about 8 a.m. Thursday in front of the Wailua Golf Course on Kuhio Highway, police said.
Police said the motorcyclist, 25, of Kapaa, was headed south following the pickup truck on the lane closer to the centerline and swerved to the outside lane to try to pass the truck.
Witnesses said the pickup truck also moved into that lane, causing the motorcyclist to lose control and strike a guardrail along the southbound shoulder, police said. Police are still investigating whether the truck hit the motorcycle.
The motorcyclist was wearing a helmet.
Police said the accident caused traffic delays. The highway reopened at 12:45 p.m.
