A 30-year-old man died Tuesday after he was hit with pepper spray and twice with a stun gun when arrested by police for disorderly conduct near Iolani Palace, the Hono­­lulu Police Department said.

Police said officers responded to a report of a man running in the middle of South King Street and acting erratically in front of Iolani Palace at about 8:15 p.m. Monday.

When officers arrived, the man refused to leave the roadway and evaded officers as they approached, police said.

Officers couldn’t stop the man with pepper spray and used a stun gun on him twice, but the man still did not cooperate, police said.

The "combative" man was detained after he tripped and fell on South King Street while trying to run from officers, police said.

Police arrested the man for investigation of disorderly conduct and escorted him to the sidewalk, where he became unresponsive.

Police said paramedics took him to the Queen’s Medical Center, where he later died.

South King and Richards streets were closed throughout the incident.
