A 9-year-old boy died Wednesday after being pulled from Kalihi Stream.
The city Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as Mike Grdosic.
Emergency Medical Services said in a written report that the boy was pulled out of the stream by friends, and was in critical condition and not breathing when first responders arrived.
Fire dispatch got the call at 3:19 p.m. and arrived at 3:40 p.m. near the area of 3351 Kalihi St.
Fire Capt. David Jenkins said fire personnel got to the patient’s side at 3:45 p.m. They brought the boy up the stream bank to the roadside about 100 yards away, and transferred him to Emergency Medical Services paramedics, he said.
EMS transported the boy in critical condition to Kuakini Medical Center, officials said.
Police were at the scene and are investigating.
Some Kalihi teens who were in the area at the time said the boy was in water roughly 4 feet deep.
The teens were swimming nearby and had seen the boy earlier with his elementary school-age friends.
Mason Tulenkow, 13, said some of the boy’s friends called an adult, who called 911.
The teenagers said the area they were in is a well-known swimming spot nicknamed "Teen Roof." The area is toward the end of Kalihi Street in Kalihi Valley.
"Feel sad," Calijah Mareko, 14, said about the boy’s death.
"Feel sorry," Tulenkow said.
"Cops said he didn’t hit his head or nothing when he dived in," said Mareko. "He just couldn’t swim."
