A little success was all Quintin Torres-Costa needed to get going.
The sophomore left-hander, who has fallen out of the rotation and struggled all season, recorded the final eight outs to pick up the win in Hawaii’s 6-2 victory over New Mexico State on Friday night.
A Les Murakami Stadium crowd of 1,852 let out a huge roar as Torres-Costa pumped his left fist in the air following his fifth strikeout to end the game.
He allowed the tying run to score on a balk and walked the first two batters he faced in the seventh before striking out the Aggies’ top two hitters back-to-back to escape a bases-loaded jam.
From that point on, Torres-Costa (1-3) dominated the rest of the Aggies lineup and got three huge runs in the bottom of the eighth by his teammates to pick up his first victory for Hawaii (8-14).
"What helped me was (catcher) Chayce (Ka‘aua) talking to me and the guys behind me calming me down and telling me to push it aside and go to the next pitch," Torres-Costa said. "It helped me with the strikeouts too, but I would credit them for calming me down."
Alan Baldwin drove in a career-high three runs while hitting second in the order for the first time.
Coach Mike Trapasso revamped his lineup, moving Kaeo Aliviado back down to third in the lineup and hitting Marcus Doi leadoff.
Doi singled to lead off the game and played seven innings in the outfield before he was lifted for a pinch runner.
Aliviado had two hits, including an RBI double in the eighth to score Baldwin, and scored on Eric Ramirez’s sacrifice fly to give Torres-Costa some much needed breathing room in the ninth.
"We milked (starter) Tyler (Brashears) all we could and the situation set up well for ‘Q’ to come in and face the two lefties and sure enough, I’m thinking fate is not on our side again with the two walks and a balk," Trapasso said. "You can’t say enough about what he did coming back to strike out their two best guys and I think that settled him down."
Brashears threw 121 pitches in 6 1/3 innings and gave up his first earned run in three starts since he was dropped to No. 2 in the rotation.
Hawaii had gotten 18 consecutive innings from its starting pitchers without allowing an earned run until Torres-Costa’s balk forced in a run charged to Brashears.
The right-hander allowed the only four hits by the Aggies (3-16-1) and struck out six with three walks to lower his ERA to 2.39.
"It felt like the umpire’s strike zone was a little tight and that added a few pitches on the pitch count, but after that I tried to locate my fastball and keep it down and it worked out," Brashears said.
The game was tied 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh when Ramirez hit a leadoff double and scored on a wild pitch to push Hawaii back in front.
The ‘Bows finally got a clutch two-out hit in the third inning when Baldwin snapped the team’s 1-for-13 streak with runners in scoring position with a single to left to score Ka‘aua and Jacob Sheldon-Collins to give UH a 2-1 lead.
UH allowed one run in the top of the inning when Daniel Kennon, who reached on an error by second baseman Conner Linebarger, came home on Joseph Koerper’s single to right.
Brashears followed up a five-inning scoreless performance by Jarrett Arakawa last Sunday against Oklahoma and a seven-inning scoreless start by L.J. Brewster on Thursday night with another quality start.
"He was very good and he never seemed to be in trouble, honestly, but was getting into some deep pitch counts because they were fouling off pitches," Trapasso said. "That will happen sometimes, but they were fouling off a lot of pitches because his stuff was that good tonight."
