UH has 3 teams advance at Queen’s Beach
The Hawaii sand volleyball team had three pairs advance to the gold bracket of the Queen of the Beach Challenge at Queen’s Beach on Friday.
Brittany Tiegs-Nikki Taylor, Katie Spieler-Olivia Urban and Hannah Rooks-Sammie Brown all went undefeated to win their pools. UH’s Sydney Shinn-Gianna Guinasso and Lara Schreiber-Heather Boyan advanced into the silver bracket.
Bracket play starts at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletic Complex.
Kennelly triumphs in Pipeline contest
Keala Kennelly was nearly unstoppable in 4- to 6-foot surf on Friday to take first place in the Surf N Sea Pipeline Women’s Pro at Banzai Pipeline.
The 36-year old from Kauai beat out Honolua Blomfield from the North Shore in the 35-minute final.
"The final was tough. There were none of the barrels we had this morning, so it all came down to big turns," said Kennelly.
The Pipe Pro Junior Men’s event still has one more day of competition remaining and with a high surf advisory in effect for the North Shore on Saturday, organizers will assess the conditions at first light and could possibly crown a champion by the end of the day.
Seasiders tennis team sweeps Emmanuel
The No. 18 BYU-Hawaii men’s tennis team defeated Emmanuel College 8-0 on Friday in Franklin Springs, Ga.
No. 43 Martin Chojnacki won on the first singles court, 6-0, 6-1, to set the tone for the Seasiders (10-5). BYU-Hawaii continues its East Coast swing with a Saturday match against Shorter.
» The fourth-ranked Seasiders women’s team rolled 9-0 over Emmanuel College on Friday. BYU-Hawaii (18-1) won two singles and one doubles match by default as Emmanuel did not have enough players on the court. The Seasiders face Clayton State on Saturday.
Silverswords softball team wins a pair
The Chaminade softball team took both games of a doubleheader at Holy Names in San Leandro, Calif., on Friday. Scores of both games were 4-3 and it’s Chaminade’s first road sweep since April 2013.
In the first game, the Silverswords scored three runs in the fifth inning and then added the eventual winning run on an Amber Manuel single in the sixth inning.
Coco Stewart hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning in the second game.
Chaminade (5-19, 4-10 Pacific West Conference) and Holy Names (3-25, 2-12) wrap up the four-game series with a Saturday doubleheader.
USC water polo team stops Hawaii
Caity Lopes da Silva scored the only goal for the University of Hawaii water polo team in a 10-1 loss to USC on Friday at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex.
Ioanna Haralabidis scored three goals and Monica Vavic added two for the third-ranked Trojans (17-2), who have won 15 straight matches in the series.
Ymane Hage recorded seven saves for the seventh-ranked Rainbow Wahine (10-6).
Hawaii will host Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
