SandBows fall to USC, claim bronze
Hawaii’s No. 2 pairing of Katie Spieler and Olivia Urban fell to Southern Cal’s Sarah Hughes and Kelly Claes 21-19, 21-13 in the gold bracket final of the Queen of the Beach Challenge on Saturday at the Clarence T.C. Ching Complex. Spieler and Urban defeated Hawaii’s No. 1 duo of Nikki Taylor and Brittany Tiegs 28-26, 21-16 to advance to the final.
The Rainbow Wahine won the bronze bracket with Lara Schreiber and Heather Boyan’s tightly contested 21-15, 18-21, 15-10 victory over Cal’s Emily Lunt and Sarah Cole. Boyan was also voted best blocker in the tournament.
Nebraska’s Justin Wong-Orantes and Alicia Ostrander clinched the silver bracket in a 21-18, 21-17 win over USC’s Bria Russ and Jenna Belton.
Other tournament honors were awarded to USC’s Claes for best offense and Nebraska’s Alexa Ethridge for best defense.
The SandBows return to the courts on Sunday at 2 p.m. in dual matches against Nebraska and California at the Clarence T.C. Ching Complex.
Silverswords sweep Holy Names on road
Coco Stewart went a combined 6-for-9 as the Chaminade softball team swept a doubleheader from Holy Names on Saturday in San Leandro, Calif.
In the first game, Stewart batted 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs in a 9-5 victory. Jenn Betian also scored twice for Chaminade. Stewart went 3-for-5 in the second game with a double and four RBIs in a 12-6 victory. Elia Lizarrage was 3-for-5 with two runs for Chaminade (7-19 overall, 6-10 PacWest).

Seariders third baseman Lizabelle Talataina homered and drove in four runs in her squad’s 7-3 first-game victory. Sharks third baseman Dorian Acierto drove in four and hit two home runs to lead HPU to a 12-10 win in the nightcap.
Kono and Smith to speak at QB Club
Tommy Kono, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and six-time world weightlifting champion, and Alika Smith, the boys basketball coach at Kalaheo High School, will be the guest speakers at the Honolulu Quarterback Club luncheon Monday at the Maple Garden Restaurant.
Lunch is at 11:30 a.m., followed by the program at noon. The luncheon cost is $15 per person.
Hilo baseball swept by Azusa Pacific
The Hawaii Hilo baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to Azusa Pacific — 9-1 and 6-3 — on Saturday at Azusa, Calif.
ln the first game, the Vulcans’ Samuel Kim had two hits.
»The HPU baseball team dropped a pair in Riverside, Calif., to California Baptist — 2-1 and 7-4 — on Saturday.
Sharks designated hitter Nolan Barraza collected five hits over both games for HPU (12-7, 9-5 PacWest).
Moniz wins Pipe Pro Junior
Josh Moniz tamed the 6-foot surf at Banzai Pipeline on Oahu’s North Shore to claim the Pipe Pro Junior championship on Saturday.
The 18-year-old opened the final round with the highest scoring wave and tube ride of the event, which resulted in a near-perfect 9.8, and closed with a backhand aerial 360 in the last five seconds to win. Benji Brand of Haleiwa finished second while Natxo Gonzalez of Spain claimed third.
