Hawaii is out of chances to turn things around before the start of Big West Conference play.
The Rainbow Warriors will carry a 9-16 overall record into Friday’s opener at UC Irvine following a 9-3 nonconference loss to Loyola Marymount on Wednesday at Page Stadium in Los Angeles.
The Lions (14-11) scored all of their runs in the first two innings off of three different UH pitchers, putting the game out of reach almost immediately.
Kaeo Aliviado drove in two runs with a base hit, scored the other UH run on a Marcus Doi single and made three diving catches in center.
Five UH relievers held the Lions scoreless over the final six innings, but the damage was already done.
Hawaii has lost eight of its past 11 and is 2-9 against teams with a winning record.
"When you’re staffing the game, you’ll have some up-staff guys and down-staff guys going and your down-staff guys have got to be able to put up a good inning for you," Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso said. "That second inning we couldn’t do it."
Andrew Jones (0-3) allowed two runs on two hits and Hawaii missed two opportunities to throw out runners caught trying to steal in the first inning alone.
Ryan Erickson hit a three-run double in a seven-run second inning in which both Juliene Jones and Alex Hatch were ineffective out of the bullpen.
Josh Pigg settled the game down with a scoreless fourth inning and four other pitchers didn’t give up a run, including sophomore Quintin Torres-Costa, who struck out two in the eighth inning.
Torres-Costa has struck out 24 in 17 innings and hasn’t given up a run in his past 32⁄3 innings after allowing 17 runs over his first 131⁄3 innings.
"Quintin was solid," Trapasso said. "He seems to be making the right adjustments."
Alan Baldwin and Jacob Sheldon-Collins had two hits apiece for UH, which totaled 11 in the game.
Steven Pollakov started his second consecutive game at catcher for freshman Chayce Ka‘aua, who earned some extra rest heading into conference play.
Ka‘aua had caught in 21 of Hawaii’s first 24 games.
"(Ka‘aua) has been our workhorse and says he doesn’t want the days off, but you definitely see it in the later part of four-game series it affecting his bat speed," Trapasso said. "But he’s going to be the guy out there catching three games on conference weekends."
Stephen Ventimilia singled and scored a run and Marcus Doi was 1-for-3 with an RBI single as they continue to work their way back into the lineup.
Pigg, who suffered a nasty bruise on his pitching hand against New Mexico State, was able to throw an inning and Eric Gleese worked two scoreless innings allowing one hit and no walks with two strikeouts.
Hawaii does not have a single regular hitting over .293 heading into conference play.
The Big West is wide open this year with UC Santa Barbara the only ranked team. UH is 4-2 against the Gauchos in conference play.
The first two games of the series at UC Irvine will be shown on ESPN3. All conference series are three games instead of four, which could be as big for Hawaii as any other team.
"By eliminating a four-game series, you’re eliminating basically what we saw tonight and having to use certain guys that are struggling," Trapasso said.
