Trevin Tengan’s sacrifice fly RBI lifted No. 2 Mid-Pacific over No. 7 Saint Louis 3-2 in 10 innings on Wednesday night at Les Murakami Stadium.
Mid-Pacific improved to 5-1 and remained tied with Kamehameha in the ILH standings. Saint Louis slipped to 2-5.
For much of the night, it was a pitchers’ duel between MPI’s Chase Wago and Saint Louis’ Pono Anderson. Wago went six innings, allowing two runs on four hits. He fanned five and walked one. In eight innings, Anderson permitted two runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and two walks.
Tengan, who came off the bench, went after a 2-0 pitch by reliever Brendan Uchima with the bases loaded, bringing Alex Oley home with the sacrifice fly. Uchima took the loss.
Jacob Maekawa, pitching in relief of Wago, got the win. He also hit 3-for-5 with a triple.
The Crusaders broke a scoreless the tie with a single run in the bottom of the fourth. Taylor Meilleur led off with a walk, the first issued by Wago, advanced to second base on a sac bunt, then scored on a two-out opposite-field single by Brendan Uchima. It was an impressive, lefty-versus-lefty at-bat by Uchima, who struck out earlier, battling through a two-strike count for the hit.
In the top of the fifth, Anderson seemed to be sailing along, retiring the first two batters on ground balls. Then designated hitter Evan Suemori socked a 3-1 pitch to left for a double, and Anderson walked pinch hitter Davin Takanishi. On the next pitch, Maekawa crushed it to the gap in left center for a triple, scoring Suemori and Takanishi to give MPI a 2-1 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, Travis Tanaka doubled to left with two outs, and Ryder Kuhns battled back from an 0-2 count for a double just inside the left-field line, scoring Tanaka to tie the game at 2.
In the top of the seventh, the Owls had runners at the corners with two outs when the inning ended in bizarre fashion. Matthew Kimura, the runner at first, headed to second base on the first pitch to Maekawa to draw the throw, a classic MPI baserunning ploy. The shortstop, Keith Torres, alertly ran right at the MPI runner off third base, courtesy runner Hunter Hill.
Hill beat the rundown and got back to third base with a slide, but Kimura was already standing on the bag, and the Crusaders applied the tag for the third out. It was a calculated gamble with Maekawa at the plate, having gone 2-for-3 at that point.
Maekawa relieved starting pitcher Chase Wago in the bottom of the seventh and set the side down in order.
Saint Louis loaded the bases in the bottom of the eight against Maekawa, but he induced Uchima into an inning-ending fielder’s choice grounder.
In the top of the ninth, the Owls loaded the bases with one out, but a suicide squeeze attempt with Kimura in the plate backfired. Uchima’s first pitch curved off the plate, Kimura’s bunt try missed, and Sean Kinel, who had been on third base, was eventually tagged out in a rundown for the second out. Kimura then popped out to end the inning.

No. 4 Kamehameha 18, Punahou 5
Sophomore Chase Miyasato scattered three hits over five innings and No. 4 Kamehameha pulled away with a 12-run sixth inning for an 18-5 win on Wednesday at Les Murakami Stadium.
"He played for me on intermediate," Warriors coach Tommy Perkins said. "I know he has it in him. He just had to get over the jitters."
Kamehameha improved to 5-1 in the ILH. Punahou fell to 2-5.
It was the first varsity win for Miyasato, a left-hander. He struck out three and walked two, and Punahou didn’t get a runner in scoring position against him after the first inning. He had starts against Punahou and Saint Louis as a freshman last season.
"My teammates and coaches helped settle me down," said Miyasato, who spotted his change-up effectively after the first inning. "Coach and Kekai (Rios) were calling the signals."
The Warriors began to pull away with a three-run third inning that broke a 2-all game. Punahou starting pitcher Noah Goss struggled with a walk, a hit batter, two wild pitches, and his infield committed an error. Codie Paiva’s single to center scored Rios, and a throwing error by Easton Takamoto allowed Paiva and Chance Arakaki to score.
Miyasato struggled early, permitting two runs in the first inning, but got into a rhythm and retired 10 of 11 batters.
Kamehameha put the game out of reach with a 12-run sixth inning, sending 16 batters to the plate.
Matthew Yokota, who was 3-for-4, led off with a double and scored one of his two runs on a two-run single by Kody Cacal off relief pitcher Parker Wong. Brandon Henderson’s triple to right brought home two more runs. After Kahoea Akau singled in a run and Yokota brought home two more with a single to right, the Warriors led 14-2. Henderson added a three-run double to left.
The only bad news for Kamehameha came during the third inning, when Makoa Mau was ruled out and ejected from the game for running into Punahou catcher Hunter Chow. Mau, attempting to score from second on a single, was running on the line when the collision occurred. Kamehameha fans argued that Chow had stepped up the line and into Mau’s path, but Perkins isn’t going to challenge the automatic one-game suspension for Mau.
The Warriors will play Mid-Pacific on Friday at Les Murakami.
