Warning targets pets on school grounds
Public school campuses are not dog parks, the Department of Education warns pet lovers.
The DOE has received a number of complaints regarding pet owners bringing their dogs onto school property after school hours. Schools, particularly in the Castle-Kahuku and Kailua-Kalaheo complex areas, have seen an increase in dog waste in schoolyards.
"Some of our schools are being used as a dog park," stated Lea Albert, complex-area superintendent for Castle-Kahuku. "Our schoolyards are actively used by students and adults for educational, recreational and athletic purposes. It’s important that our community help us ensure that our campuses are a healthy and safe environment."
All DOE schools have signs posted that say pets are prohibited on campus.
Hearing set for suspect shot during chase
A preliminary hearing is scheduled in Honolulu District Court on Monday for a 20-year-old McCully man charged with trying to hit a police officer in a stolen car in Waimanalo two weeks ago.
William Andres was released Wednesday from the Queen’s Medical Center, where he had been hospitalized with a stomach wound after being shot by an officer during a chase that began in Waimanalo and ended in Kaneohe on March 10.
Andres was charged March 12 with attempted first-degree assault, first-degree terroristic threatening and car theft. He remains in custody unable to post $50,000 bail.
Police initially arrested Andres on suspicion of first-degree attempted murder for allegedly trying to run over an officer. That charge was reclassified to first-degree attempted assault on an officer, according to a criminal complaint. The terroristic threatening charge stems from his actions after police approached him and ordered him to turn off the car’s engine. The criminal complaint said the suspect allegedly tried to injure the officer.
