2011 quake released tons of harmful gases

Black smoke rose from a burning building in Tokyo’s Odaiba area after Japan was struck by a magnitude-9.0 earthquake off its northeastern coast on March 11, 2011. About 7,000 tons of chemical pollution was released from damage caused by the earthquake, according to a study prepared for Geophysical Research Letters.
