Hawaii Pacific tennis teams remain hot
The No. 1-ranked Hawaii Pacific men’s tennis team continued its undefeated season with a 5-0 victory over Concordia (N.Y.) College in Pensacola, Fla., on Saturday.
The Sharks (18-0) first leaned on their fifth-ranked doubles tandem of Thibaud Berland and Yann Renault, which notched an 8-5 victory. Jaume Martinez-Vich and Clemens Graute followed with a win by the same margin and teammates Maik Burlage and Marko Lenz claimed their doubles matchup with an 8-3 win.
Lenz added a 7-5, 6-4 singles triumph and Martinez-Vich breezed to a 6-0, 6-3 win to secure the overall victory.
» The HPU women’s tennis team also went undefeated in Saturday’s matchup with Concordia College, notching a 6-0 victory as the No. 7 Sharks improved to 18-4 on the season.
HPU claimed all three doubles matches as the teams of Kristyna Hancarova and Nicole Hoynaski (8-2), Lea Kruse-Utermann and Lorena Gheorghe (8-2) and Vivian Hansen and Sofia Tavitian (8-6) served up victories.
Hancarova (6-0, ret.), Kruse-Utermann (6-2, 6-2) and Hansen (6-0, 6-4) won singles tilts to complete the sweep.
UH Hilo softball team bests BYU-Hawaii
The Vulcans downed the visiting Seasiders, 8-0 and 6-4, in a PacWest Conference doubleheader in Hilo on Saturday.
Hilo starter Vanessa Salinas (15-8) held BYU-Hawaii to just two hits in the first game, a mercy-rule-shortened shutout in which the hurler struck out five over six innings. The home team received two hits and three RBIs apiece from Salinas and designated hitter Melanie Morelos as the offense took advantage of six walks.
UH Hilo (25-15, 14-9 PacWest) was led by Morelos in the second game as the slugger went 3-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs. Catcher Mikaela Williamson paced BYU-Hawaii (7-21, 3-15) with two RBIs.
HPU, Chaminade split softball double dip
The Silverswords claimed the first game 4-3 and fell to the Sharks 7-3 in the rematch of a PacWest Conference doubleheader Saturday at Central Oahu Regional Park.
HPU (18-16, 8-10 PacWest) received three hits from third baseman Dorian Acierto, while Chaminade (8-32, 7-17) saw catcher Ashley Phelps collect three hits and three RBIs.
