Accounting firm principal arrested in theft
Police arrested the managing partner of local accounting firm PKF Pacific Hawaii on Sunday on suspicion of first-degree theft and money laundering.
Patrick Oki, 45, was arrested at Honolulu Airport at 10:50 a.m.
PKF underwent a major restructuring last year after the departure of two partners and other key personnel.
Oki, a certified fraud examiner, also serves as the treasurer of Ahahui Koa Anuenue, the nonprofit fundraising arm of University of Hawaii athletics, and is a past president of the University of Hawaii Alumni Association. He was also an executive board member of the Boy Scouts of America Aloha Council.
Oki was charged with four counts of first-degree theft and three counts of money laundering. It was unclear Sunday how the charges relate to his activities.
He was released after posting $250,000 bail.
Police officer hits, injures cyclist with car
A 47-year-old off-duty policeman allegedly hit a bicyclist with his car early Sunday morning near the entrance to Ala Moana Beach Park, sending the victim to the hospital with critical head injuries.
Police said there is no change in duty status for the officer, an 18-year veteran of the force, while the matter is under investigation. He is assigned to the Chinatown district.
Police said a red 2013 Honda driven by the officer struck a bicyclist at about 5:45 a.m. at the intersection of Kamakee Street and Ala Moana Boulevard.
The bicyclist, a man in his 20s or 30s, was just outside a crosswalk, heading mauka against a traffic signal, and "abruptly entered the road," police said.
The police officer was traveling Koko Head and had the green light.
Paramedics took the victim in critical condition to a hospital, according to an Emergency Medical Services report.
He was not wearing a helmet, the EMS report said.
Police have classified the incident as a negligent injury case.
Medical problem causes driver to crash
A man in his 20s who suffered some sort of medical problem crashed into a van carrying six people, then struck and injured an 81-year-old pedestrian before crashing into a Payless ShoeSource store in Wahiawa on Sunday afternoon, Honolulu fire officials said.
At 1:24 p.m. firefighters were sent to 935 California Ave., where they found a male driver who "suffered some sort of medical episode and lost control of his vehicle," said Honolulu Fire Capt. David Jenkins.
The driver crashed into a van carrying two adults and four children, then hit the male pedestrian, who suffered an injured right ankle, Jenkins said.
The driver’s vehicle then smashed the window of the Payless ShoeSource, Jenkins said.
No one in the store or vehicles was hurt.
Inmate fails to return from work furlough
State sheriffs and Honolulu police are looking for a 27-year-old Oahu Community Correctional Center inmate who failed to return from a work furlough early Sunday morning.
Isaiah Kaisa was serving time for forgery, ID theft, unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle and a firearm violation. He was scheduled for a parole hearing in June.
The Department of Public Safety says Kaisa will face an escape charge when he is recaptured.
Kaisa is described as 6 feet 3 inches tall, weighing 259 pounds.
