Paddling event will have 250 competitors
Travis Grant, Jimmy Austin, Daniel Chun and Will Richenstein headline a field of some 250 paddlers for Saturday’s Scott Hawaii State Championship, the Kanaka Ikaika Racing Association event that finishes off Magic Island.
Grant has already secured the Maui Jim Waterman’s Series with his win at last month’s Allstate Oahu Championships and could win the Scott Hawaii Gold Challenge by placing sixth or better Saturday. KIRA’s Poai Puni Series titles have also been clinched by Zsolt Szadovski (surfski), Bobby Pratt (OC-1 men) and Amy Lawson Woodward (OC-1 women).
Divisions for Saturday’s race includes OC-1, OC-2, OC-3, OC-6, SS-1, SS-2, SUP, prone paddleboard and V-1. The long course is from Makai Pier to Magic Island beginning at 9:45 a.m. The short course begins at 10 a.m. and runs from Maunalua Bay to Magic Island.
