Moore 3-peats at Bells Beach
Honolulu’s Carissa Moore won the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach title on Friday at Victoria, Australia, to become the first female surfer to win the event three consecutive times in the Championship Tour era.
In the final, Moore defeated six-time world champion Stephanie Gilmore of Australia, 14.00 to 13.27.
"It’s such an honor, I love coming down here and it’s such a magical place," Moore was quoted as saying on a World Surf League press release. "It’s just been such a beautiful experience and I feel super blessed."
Moore beat Australia’s Sally Fitzgibbons in the semifinals (15.50 to 13.40) and France’s Johanne Defay (16.37 to 8.23) in the quarterfinals.
Moore, a two-time world champion, has won three consecutive tour events. She triumphed on Maui last season and won at Gold Coast, Australia, at the start of this season.
Moore beat Tyler Wright of Australia at Bells Beach in 2013 and 2014.
Coco Ho of Sunset Beach lost to California’s Courtney Conlogue in Friday’s quarterfinals, 15.56 to 15.17.
On the men’s side, Mick Fanning of Australia defeated Brazil’s Adriano de Souza in the first tiebreak final in Championship Tour history.
Fanning and de Souza each had a two-wave total of 15.27. In a tiebreak situation, the highest single-wave score wins the heat, which was Fanning’s 8.17.
