Despite getting outhit in the series, Cal Poly avoided the costly mistakes Hawaii couldn’t stop making to finish off a three-game sweep at Baggett Stadium with a 12-5 victory on Sunday in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
Mark Mathias went 3-for-5 with a triple and three runs scored and Brett Barbier tripled, homered and drove in six runs for the Mustangs (14-18, 4-2).

The Rainbow Warriors (12-23, 3-6) had a season-high 15 hits and finished with six more hits (35-29) in the series than Cal Poly.
Four errors, costly baserunning mistakes and poor pitching in key situations doomed the ‘Bows, as Hawaii was swept in a Big West series for the sixth time in the past two years.
"We just got beat today, but if you take care of business Friday and Saturday, today is one of those games where you get beat but still come away with the series," Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso said Sunday. "We hit the ball well today, but their hits were two-out double and home runs where we couldn’t get the big hits with guys on base."
Alex Sawelson went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and Chayce Ka‘aua had three hits, including an RBI single to give Hawaii a 2-0 lead after two.
UH, which knocked Cal Poly starter Justin Calomeni out of the game in the second inning, scored the first two runs in all three games in the series.
Cal Poly erased the deficit a lot sooner on Sunday, battering Hawaii starter Jarrett Arakawa (2-1) for four two-out runs in the bottom of the third.
Barbier gave Cal Poly the lead with a two-run single and John Schuknecht drove in Barbier with a base hit to make it 4-2.
Jordan Ellis bunted for a hit and took second on one of four Hawaii errors in the game.
Trapasso pulled Arakawa after that and went to Andrew Jones, who got out of the inning.
"Jarrett actually felt pretty good and I honestly think that was a negative for him because he said his shoulder felt as good as it had felt all year, but because of it, he was overthrowing a little bit," Trapasso said. "Because of it, he struggled with command in the strike zone and (Cal Poly) just did a nice job."
Jones, who threw 61⁄3 innings of one-run ball last Sunday against UC Davis, struck out Ryan Drobny to start the fifth, but was pulled with two outs and a runner on.
Cody Culp, who threw 22⁄3 scoreless innings on Friday, walked Brian Mundell intentionally and gave up an RBI single to Zack Zehner to make it 5-2.
Barbier then crushed a three-run homer to put the Mustangs up by six.
Culp faced four batters and did not record an out.
Hawaii used four more relievers and seven total pitchers in the game.
The ‘Bows tried to answer with consecutive doubles to lead off the fifth, but Stephen Ventimilia was thrown out at home for the first out.
Baldwin doubled off the glove of Schuknecht in right, but Ventimilia had to hold between second and third until he was sure the ball was dropped.
He was waved home despite UH trailing by six with nobody out and was out easily on the relay from shortstop Peter Van Gansen.
Cal Poly, which has won six in a row against Hawaii, scored in six consecutive innings. Michael Gomez (1-2) allowed three runs on 10 hits in 42⁄3 innings to earn the win and Erich Uelmen earned a save throwing the final 31⁄3 innings.
Junior Josh Pigg gave up one hit and one walk in 2⁄3 innings and Quintin Torres-Costa struck out two over the final two innings. They were the only UH relievers not to give up a run.
Marcus Doi finished 2-for-5 with a double and scored a run and Baldwin finished 3-for-4 to raise his season average to .292.
Seven of Hawaii’s nine regular starters are now hitting .250 or better, with Sawelson leading the way at .309 and Ramirez hitting .308.
Sawelson, who played third base earlier in the season, is hitting .339 (21-for-62) in 15 games as the designated hitter.
Ka‘aua is batting .550 (11-for-20) during a six-game hitting streak in which he’s upped his average 78 points to .278.
Next up for UH is a six-game homestand, beginning with a series against CSUN starting Friday.
