Woman involved in shooting is charged
Hawaii island police charged a 25-year-old Hilo woman in connection with an officer-involved shooting in Hilo after an officer tried to stop a stolen car Saturday.
Cherish Torres was charged Monday with unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, first-degree criminal property damage and five traffic offenses. Her bail was set at $36,075, police said in a news release. She remained in custody pending her initial court appearance Tuesday.
Police said a patrol officer attempted to stop a black Honda Civic at Lanikaula and Nowelo streets at about 4 p.m. Saturday.
The car, which was reported stolen April 6, hit a vehicle at Komohana Street and Ainaola Drive and collided with a police vehicle before fleeing down Haihai Street.
On Kilauea Avenue the car headed toward an officer on foot, police said. In response the officer fired one shot toward the car, police said.
The car then struck a police vehicle in pursuit, and both vehicles ended up in a gulch.
Homeless man is charged in stabbing
Prosecutors have charged a 57-year-old homeless man in the stabbing of a 49-year-old woman in Waianae, police said Monday.
Herman K. Nunuha Jr. was being held on $25,000 bail after he was charged with second-degree assault Sunday.
Paramedics took a 49-year-old woman to the hospital in serious condition with stab wounds at 12:01 p.m. Saturday from a Farrington Highway address in Waianae. The suspect was arrested 30 minutes later about a block from the scene.
9 people flee as home office catches fire
Nine people including two children were evacuated from a two-story house in the Palolo area Monday after a fire started in a second-story home office.
The fire at 1320 7th Ave. was under control 15 minutes after firefighters received the initial alarm at 4:32 p.m., fire spokesman Capt. David Jenkins said.
Jenkins said fire officials were investigating the cause of the fire and the amount of damage to the house. He said damage was restricted to the home office.
Jenkins said the nine people were staying with their relatives, and none of them suffered major injuries. A female suffered minor injuries while she was evacuating the home, he said.
Trial date is set in terroristic threat case
A criminal trial for a 26-year-old Waipahu woman who allegedly tried to run down a group of people with her car in Waimanalo is scheduled for June 15 in Circuit Court.
Prosecutors charged Amber Nakamura with first-degree terroristic threatening and second-degree criminal property damage March 25. She remains in custody at Oahu Community Correctional Center unable to post bail of $20,000.
At her Circuit Court arraignment Monday, Nakamura entered a plea of not guilty.
Police said Nakamura attempted to hit four people with her car March 23. During the dispute, Nakamura also allegedly hit a parked vehicle, causing more than $1,500 in damage.
3 suspects sought in attack in Kalihi
Police are looking for three suspects who attacked two men Saturday night on North King Street in Kalihi.
Police said three men jumped out of a white sedan at about 11:30 p.m. and attacked the two victims, ages 33 and 37, who were walking on North King Street.
The 33-year-old man was hit on the head several times with a bat. The 37-year-old man suffered multiple stab wounds. The case has been classified as a second-degree attempted murder.
Police have not released descriptions of the three suspects or other details of the attack.
Police closed North King Street between Pua Lane and Liliha Street for several hours after the attack while officers conducted an investigation.
