Oregon downs HPU in A&T semifinals
Defending national champion Oregon fended off Hawaii Pacific 283.495-281.325 on Saturday in the semifinals of the National Collegiate Acrobatics & Tumbling Association National Championships in Fairmont, W.Va.
The Sharks (6-2) built a 98.10-97.60 lead midway through the competition after claiming the acro event by a 0.6-point margin.
The Ducks (4-3) bounced back by winning the toss (29.15-28.45) and tumbling (57.525-56.325) events before capturing the team competition (99.22-98.45) to secure the victory and advance to the championship round.
HPU baseball sweeps Academy of Art
On the strength of 28 combined hits, the Hawaii Pacific baseball team blasted Academy of Art, 11-2 and 12-0, in a PacWest doubleheader Saturday evening at Hans L’Orange Park.
The Sharks (25-20, 15-15 PacWest) were buoyed in the first contest by Jordan Oshiro’s four hits and Nolan Barraza’s four RBIs. Starting pitcher Rico Garcia (6-4) notched the win after scattering three hits without surrendering a run and striking out six through eight innings.
HPU continued the romp in the return matchup as Steven Camberos and Oshiro tallied four and three RBIs, respectively, and combined for five hits.
UH Hilo gets win, tie in softball double dip
The University of Hawaii Hilo softball team claimed the first game of a PacWest doubleheader 4-2 in 10 innings over visiting Hawaii Pacific and the squads tied 5-5 in the return match Saturday in Hilo.
The Vulcans (30-17-1, 19-11-1 PacWest) were aided in the victory by Vanessa Salinas (18-8), who pitched all 10 innings and struck out eight before connecting on a two-run, walk-off home run. Hilo’s Emily Greene also homered in the sixth inning of that contest and the first baseman chipped in two solo home runs in the tied follow-up.
The Sharks (25-20-1, 15-14-1) were led in the second game by Paige Crawford, who pounded a two-run homer. HPU held a 5-3 lead entering the seventh frame, but surrendered two unearned runs to blow the lead and the squads settled for a tie.
Williams and Minn to speak at QB Club
University of Hawaii assistant women’s basketball coach Dekita Williams and former chair of the Hawaii State Boxing Commission Herbert Minn will speak at the Honolulu Quarterback Club luncheon on Monday.
Williams joined the Rainbow Wahine coaching staff two seasons ago and helped guide UH to its first regular-season conference title since 1997-98, the Wahine ending the campaign on a 15-game winning streak. The team finished its season with a 23-9 overall record and a 14-2 mark in the Big West.
Minn has been involved in boxing for 75 years and has served in multiple capacities within the sport as a boxer, head coach, instructor, manager, match maker, promoter, official, association chair and tournament director. He will provide insight on the upcoming Mayweather vs. Pacquiao fight on Saturday, which is being hyped as the richest fight in the history of professional boxing.
The $15 luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. at Maple Garden restaurant and the program starts at noon.
