Coast Guard halts search for fisherman
After a four-day search that covered about 4,530 square miles, the Coast Guard announced Monday that it was calling off its search for a 67-year-old fisherman who went missing Friday in waters off Lanai.
Maui County firefighters had suspended their search for the missing man a day earlier.
Ron Ingraham was fishing with Kenny Corder aboard the 34-foot fishing vessel Menehune when it ran aground off Lanai shortly after midnight. The men made an emergency call to the Coast Guard, and Corder was rescued in the water about three hours later. Ingraham was not wearing a life jacket when the boat capsized.
Ingraham had survived a similar incident in November when another boat he was aboard, the 25-foot sailboat Malia, began taking on water roughly 46 miles off Kailua-Kona.
On Dec. 10, more than a week after official search efforts had been suspended, Ingraham made contact with the Coast Guard from his boat and was subsequently located and rescued by a Navy vessel. Ingraham told media at the time that he had survived his 12 days adrift by eating raw fish.
