Goliath the alligator — believed to be the world’s oldest in captivity — died Wednesday at the Hono­lulu Zoo of apparent liver failure.

Goliath was at least 20 years old when he came to the Hono­lulu Zoo in 1953 at a length of 10 feet. When he died, global zoo records made Goliath — an octogenarian — the "longest lived captive alligator ever recorded in the world," the zoo said.

"We are very sorry to have Goliath leave us, but are very happy to have had him with us for so long," said Baird Fleming, the zoo’s director.

A male alligator named Bob remains at the zoo.
