The Moanalua boys volleyball dynasty continues.

Na Menehune swept Waianae 25-13, 25-20, 25-21 on Thursday night at a noisy Radford gym to capture their fifth straight OIA championship.

They did it with their 6-foot-4 junior star, Austin Matautia, the UH commit, who drilled 15 kills.

But Matautia wasn’t all that Moanalua threw at the Waianae defense. Seyi Engleman, who is only 5-foot-8, came through with 11 kills and Kamalu Kaaa, another 6-foot-4 hitter, added seven.

All this was being done thanks to the dual setting threat of Zachary Kagehiro and Noah Marasco-Ayau, who spread the wealth evenly.

"The boys work for this day in and day out," said Moanalua coach Alan Cabanting, whose squad improved to 14-0 and heads to the state tournament. "As the seniors go, the freshmen come in and build this strong tradition. They teach them what they’ve learned and it continues."

Engleman praised both setters.

"They were like butter," he said. "They put it on the bread so we could eat it right there."

Waianae setter Jahren Muliagatele had a smooth game as well, placing the ball around to his hitters.

Nayton Kuresa pounded seven kills for the Seariders (12-1), who will also head to the states. Landon Young and Akoni Faumuiana had six kills each.

"We tried to play our game, but they are a strong team," Young said.

Seariders coach Wilhelm Wagner said, "We didn’t ask for a championship, but we were here. And there’s still lots more time to play (at states). Moanalua is a well put together team."

Na Menehune breezed to victory in the first set before Waianae fought valiantly in the second and kept it close all the way to 22-20. But after two mistakes, a Matautia blast ended it.

In the final set, Waianae again kept it close all the way until 24-21 before Matautia took a patented set by Marasco-Ayau to finish it.

"Everyone knows what Matautia can do, but when we spread our offense around, it makes us a much more dynamic team and much harder to defend," Cabanting said.
