Pool firm caught dumping wastewater
Firefighters stopped a pool resurfacing company from dumping wastewater down a storm drain Saturday near Punahou.
The incident occurred about 10 a.m. near Central Union Church at the intersection of Beretania and Punahou streets, said Honolulu Fire spokesman Capt. David Jenkins.
He said a concerned citizen called the fire department about the pool resurfacing company cleaning its equipment and dumping a 55-gallon garbage can filled with blue-colored water and debris into the storm drain.
Firefighters arrived and stopped the company’s actions, then checked the area for hazards to people or property. None were found, but the department notified the Coast Guard about the possible environmental impact.
Jenkins said firefighters also checked nearby storm drains for any blockage caused by the illegal dumping.
He said the pool company was doing work at one of the nearby high-rises and the garbage can contained wastewater from washing out its equipment. He did not release the name of the company.
It is against the law to dump anything into a storm drain because the water flows out to streams and the ocean.
Shopping center fire began in L&L kitchen
A stovetop burner accidentally left on overnight ignited a blaze that heavily damaged a Kailua shopping center early Thursday, Honolulu fire officials said.
Pets and staff from an animal hospital were evacuated after a fire broke out at about 3:14 a.m. at L&L Hawaiian Barbecue in the Aikahi Shopping Center.
The fire was mainly restricted to the kitchen, said Honolulu Fire spokesman Capt. David Jenkins.
But Jenkins said five businesses, including the animal hospital, share a common attic space where there was possible smoke damage.
Damage to the building and its contents was estimated at $400,000. No injuries were reported.
