Garvin will run bowl game, hoops event
Daryl Garvin has been promoted to executive director of the Hawaii Bowl and the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic basketball tournament.
Garvin had been associate executive director of the Hawaii Bowl and the Diamond Head Classic since 2009.
Both events are held in Honolulu in December.
Garvin replaced David Matlin, who was hired as the University of Hawaii athletic director in March.
Payne bows out in semifinals; Toledo wins
Lahaina’s Dusty Payne lost in the semifinals to eventual champion Filipe Toledo on Saturday during the Oakley Lowers Pro at San Clemente, Calif.
Toledo, of Brazil, beat France’s Jeremy Flores 16.13 to 13.70 in the final held in 3- to-5-foot surf.
Payne beat Australia’s Yadin Nicol 17.67 to 9.66 in the quarterfinals, before losing to Toledo 17.24 to 13.27 in the semifinals.
"It’s such a fun wave here and I’m pleased with the result," Payne said in a World Surf League press release. "Toledo is pretty much untouchable out here, so I just stuck to what I can do best, which is big, open-faced turns."
Hara, Suppa in 6-way tie for third place
Honolulu’s Kyosuke Hara and Kyle Suppa shot a 4-under-par 66 and are two strokes off the lead after Saturday’s first round of the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship in San Francisco.
Hara and Suppa, who are in a six-way tie for third, played the Lake Course at Olympic Country Club.
Maverick McNealy of California and Viraat Badhwar of Australia lead after firing a 6-under 64 at the Ocean Course.
California’s Taylor Wood and Jordan Nasser (Lake Course) and Oregon’s Tim Tucker and Kyle Crawford (Ocean Course) are tied for second at 65.
Baxter, Moller win SUP event on Maui
Maui’s Connor Baxter and Andrea Moller continued their dominance in the OluKai Ho‘olaule‘a stand-up paddleboard race Saturday in Kahului.
Baxter, who claimed his fourth title, completed the 8-mile course in 44 minutes, 25 seconds.
Moller crossed in 53:19 for her seventh straight race win.
Both won $15,000.
More than 350 paddlers representing 12 countries entered the competition.
Sharks sweep Silverswords in softball
Sharae Esprecion batted 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs and Kristen Caskey pitched an eight-hitter as the Hawaii Pacific softball team beat Chaminade 6-2 to complete a doubleheader sweep Saturday at Howard A. Okita Field.
In the first game, Courtney Ahlo batted 2-for-3 with a triple and four RBIs and Paige Crawford pitched a five-hitter in the Sharks’ 11-3 five-inning victory.
HPU improved to 25-21-1 overall and 15-15-1 in the PacWest; Chaminade dropped to 10-37 and 9-22.
