Honolulu Star-Advertiser parent company Oahu Publications Inc. has won a Maggie Award from the Western Publishing Association for "Unlikely Treasures," an article in Halekulani Living magazine, an exclusive in-room magazine published for the hotel by OPI.
The Maggie, presented Saturday in California, was for Best Editorial Layout for a consumer publication with circulation under 75,000 copies.
The award-winning piece was among seven OPI submissions that were selected as finalists in the competition, which included entries from regional, trade industry publications and national publications for work published in 2014. The Maggies honor excellence among publishing and media professionals in 24 Western states.
OPI’s Maggie comes on the heels of being honored with five Pele Awards — including two gold-level Peles — in a competition hosted by the American Advertising Federation-Hawaii chapter.
The state-level Pele Awards were presented for the Star-Advertiser’s "Wall-E" Christmas ornament in the Advertising Industry Self-promotion category; and in the Elements of Advertising, photography campaign for "Rhythm of the Islands" photographed by Kyle Rothenborg and published in the Trump Ho‘okipa in-room magazine produced by OPI.
The "Rhythm of the Islands" piece also was a finalist in the Maggies competition.
The newspaper racks designed for Metro, a weekly OPI publication for the Downtown-Chinatown-Kakaako-Ala Moana area launched in September, won a silver-level award in the AAF-Hawaii competition for nontraditional advertising.
Photography by Rae Huo for a piece titled "Toy Story!" published in Halekulani Living also won a silver award in the Elements of Advertising, color photography category, in which OPI also won bronze for Mark Arbeit’s images, "The Legend of Norma Jeane," published in HILuxury, a bimonthly luxury lifestyle magazine. It also was a finalist in the Maggies.
HILuxury’s October-November issue was a Maggies finalist in the Special Interest Consumer category, and Halekulani Living was a finalist in three more categories.
