Three teenagers were injured when the sport utility vehicle they were in crashed into a tree Wednesday in Kapaa, Kauai.
Police said three male teenagers were riding in a blue Dodge SUV heading west on Kawaihau Road at 3 p.m. Wednesday when the 17-year-old driver lost control of the vehicle and hit a large tree and fence.
During the crash the back-seat passenger, 18, was thrown from the SUV. He was taken to Wilcox Memorial Hospital and then taken by medevac to Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition. He was upgraded to stable condition.
Police transported the driver to Wilcox, where he was treated for minor injuries and released. The front-seat passenger, 16, was initially in serious condition and later in stable condition, police said.
Police said speed was a possible factor in the crash.
Police shut down Kawaihau Road until about 7 p.m. while police Traffic Safety Section investigated.
