The cruise ship Star Princess, with 4,000 passengers and crew members, left Lahaina on Thursday night following a four-day visit during which about 30 passengers were quarantined in their cabins because they suffered from symptoms of norovirus, a state transportation official said.

The ship arrived in Hono­­lulu on Monday from San Francisco and stopped at Kauai, Hilo and then Lahaina on Thursday.

Passengers began showing symptoms of gastrointestinal illness before the ship arrived in Hono­lulu. Those who did not show symptoms were allowed to leave the ship, said Tim Saka­hara, state Transportation Department spokes­­man.

About 30 passengers were quarantined in their cabins, said Saka­hara.

Passengers were checked at least twice a day by the ship’s medical personnel for symptoms.

The cruise ship left for Mexico on Thursday night.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was contacted by the cruise line because the outbreak puts the vessel under the jurisdiction of the federal agency.

State health officials said they were informed about the problem and monitored the situation.

According to the CDC website, norovirus is very contagious, and outbreaks can occur anywhere people gather or food is served. Outbreaks on cruise ships account for only about 1 percent of all reported norovirus outbreaks, the CDC website said.

People with norovirus usually vomit and have diarrhea. Some might need to be hospitalized and can even die. Infected people can spread norovirus to others through close contact or by contaminating food and surfaces.
