Windward United Church of Christ has awarded its 2015 Holmes Scholarships to 10 high school students.
The recipients are Desiree Aitavale, Waipahu High School; Katherine Bratt, St. Andrew’s Priory School for Girls; Dutch Claybaugh, Damien Memorial High School; Xavier Claybaugh, California Maritime Academy; Jessica Dickerson, Kalaheo High School; Farao Kolone Maileoni, Farrington High School; Kelsey Ann Mamizuka, Kahuku High School; and Kamaile Galindo, Logan Myers and Chris Makaneole-Waoilama, Kailua High School.
Recipients will be honored at the 9 a.m. worship service May 17 at the church at 38 Kaneohe Bay Drive.
In a news release, Richard Galluzzi, a member of the selection committee, said, "We received a record number of applications this year and were impressed with the quality and passion of each applicant."
The scholarships — in honor of former pastor Jerome C. Holmes, who was devoted to serving the island’s youth, and his wife, Eva P. Holmes — provide financial aid for students continuing their education after high school. The scholarship fund has been in place for more than five decades.
Generous gifts by Fenwicke W. Holmes, son of the Rev. Holmes, and The Ananda Fund Hawaii made possible the number of scholarships awarded this year, the release said. For additional information, contact the church at windwarducc@hawaii.rr.com or 254-3802.
