After four rounds, the top two seeds in all four divisions of the Carlsmith Ball/ HHSAA State Tennis Championships advanced to Saturday’s finals.
Punahou’s Kawika Lam lost his first game of the tournament in a 6-4, 6-0 win over OIA champion Andre Ilagan of Farrington, then swept Hawaii Prep’s Junichi Minakata 6-1, 6-1. Lam will face second seed Jeffrey Liang of Hawaii Baptist in his attempt to win a third straight state title.
St. Francis sophomore Taylor Lau is on track to defend her state championship in girls singles, sweeping her way through the third and fourth rounds. She will meet Mid-Pacific’s Skyla Alcon in the title match.
Both singles finals are repeats of the ILH championships.
Top seeds Jordan Azuma and Phuc Hyunh of ‘Iolani will play Punahou’s Austin Hamamoto and Travis Lau in the boys doubles final. The girls doubles final pits top-seeded Sarah Ikioka and Kylee Kato of Kamehameha-Maui against Katreina Corpuz and Alyssia Fossorier of Punahou.
Punahou leads the boys team standings by 10 points and the girls’ race by five. All four finals will be held at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Central Oahu Regional Park.
