Former University of Hawaii running back Joey Iosefa said he has plans for his first National Football League paycheck.
"It’s going straight to my savings (account)," said Iosefa, who was selected in the seventh round, 231st overall, by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on May 2.
On Tuesday, Iosefa signed a four-year contract that could be worth as much as $2,258,000 overall.
Iosefa agreed to a signing bonus of $68,000, the only guaranteed amount in the contract. If he remains on the active roster, he would receive these minimum salaries for a player entering the NFL this season: $435,000 in 2015, $510,000 in 2016, $585,000 in 2017 and $660,000 in 2018.
Last year’s 231st draft selection — defensive end Ben Gardner by the Dallas Cowboys — received a signing bonus of $59,172.
Agent Aaron Gordon said the Buccaneers agreed to the maximum bonus for that slot if Iosefa would sign on Tuesday.
"It’s a dream come true," Iosefa said. "But it’s only the beginning. There’s a lot of hard work to do now. I have to go out and earn it."
Iosefa witnessed the cold side of the business at the end of a minicamp on Saturday. In the locker room, there were rows of bags belonging to the dozens of players who did not make the Buccaneers’ offseason roster.
The Buccaneers’ organized team activities started Monday and will run through mid-June. Iosefa said he has aligned as a fullback, H-back, tight end, slotback and wideout during drills.
He said he enjoys the training table, which has each food item labeled for calories and nutritional amounts.
Iosefa has been told he has a chance to compete for the starting fullback’s job.
"Honestly, it’s a good situation for Joey," Gordon said.
Gordon said Iosefa plans to make charitable donations in Hawaii and Tampa Bay.
"Hawaii has done so much for Joey," Gordon said. "Joey wants to give back."
