Ikebana master

  • Earl Shimabukuro used chicken wire in his latest ikebana display, an example of the more contemporary sogetsu style.
  • COURTESY ROGER TINIUS
This arrangement by Gwendolyn Nagata is accented with driftwood.
  • CRAIG T. KOJIMA / CKOJIMA@STARADVERTISER.COM
Earl Shimabukuro’s taisaku (large-scale ikebana) is made up of nine bamboo poles 12 to 20 feet tall. The poles are painted magenta, and Shimabukuro split the tops into thin “branches” that arch toward the ground. It is installed on the Beretania Street side of the Honolulu Museum of Art School.
