Hawaii’s Carissa Moore, Malia Manuel and Coco Ho advanced to the quarterfinals of the Oi Rio Women’s Pro on Saturday in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Moore and Manuel advanced directly to the quarterfinals by winning their three-person third-round heats. Moore posted a two-wave total of 14.87, while Manuel recorded a 13.77. Hawaii’s Tatiana Weston-Webb and Ho finished last in the third round.
In the fourth round, Ho beat Brazil’s Silvana Lima 11.16 to 9.43 and Weston-Webb fell to California’s Courtney Conlogue 15.83 to 10.87.
In the second round, Manuel defeated Australia’s Laura Enever 15.60 to 14.27, and Ho beat Australia’s Dimity Stoyle 9.83 to 8.17. Hawaii’s Alessa Quizon lost in the second round to France’s Johanne Defay 10.00 to 5.43.
UH women’s track and field places sixth
The University of Hawaii’s Alex Porlier Langlois won the shot put and Rachel Toliver claimed the triple jump, and the Rainbow Wahine finished sixth at the Big West Track and Field Championship on Saturday at Riverside, Calif.
Porlier Langlois recorded a 52 feet, 6 1/2 inches and Toliver posted a 41-9 1/4. Porlier Langlois also finished second in the hammer throw with a toss of 169-10.
Hawaii finished with 55 points.
Cal State Northridge won the nine-team competition with 212 points, followed by UC Davis (168) and Cal Poly (102).
Galdiano leads Jennie K by 12 strokes
Mariel Galdiano shot a 1-under-par 73 to extend her lead to 12 strokes after the second round of the Jennie K Wilson Invitational women’s golf tournament Saturday at Mid-Pacific Country Club.
Allysha Mae Mateo (73) is second and Rose Huang (76) is third at 151.
The final round starts today at 7 a.m.
HPU men lose in Division II tennis final
The top-ranked Hawaii Pacific men’s tennis team fell to No. 2 Barry 5-3 in the final of the NCAA Division II National Championships on Saturday at Surprise, Ariz.
Maik Burlage and Marko Lenz won their doubles match, and Burlage and Thibaud Berland won singles matches for the Sharks (24-1), who finished as the national runner-up for the second consecutive season.
BYU-Hawaii women’s tennis falls in semis
The No. 3 Brigham Young-Hawaii women’s tennis team lost to No. 2 Barry 5-0 on Saturday in the semifinals of the NCAA Division II National Championships at Surprise, Ariz.
The Seasiders (32-2) dropped two singles matches Saturday after losing three doubles matches Friday before play was suspended because of rain.
