Northern Colorado outfielder Jensen Park, a 2011 ‘Iolani School graduate, was named the Western Athletic Conference player of the year on Tuesday.
Park was named the Great West Conference player of the year as a sophomore before the Bears moved to the WAC the following season.
Entering this week, he is third in the NCAA with a .437 batting average and hit .531 in WAC play, which is the highest average in 23 years.
Park also led the conference with an .802 slugging percentage, a .575 on-base percentage, 51 hits and 77 total bases.
UNC opens the WAC tournament in Mesa, Ariz., on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
» Oklahoma State middle infielder Tim Arakawa, a 2011 Moanalua High alumnus, was named to the All-Big 12 second team on Tuesday.
Arakawa, who also made the second team last year, hit .293 with a team-leading 35 RBIs and 10 doubles with nine stolen bases. He has reached base safely in 26 consecutive games.
The Cowboys are seeded second in the Big 12 Tournament and play West Virginia on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m.
» Kentucky outfielder Ka‘ai Tom, a 2012 Saint Louis alumnus, went 3-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs in a 6-3 loss to Auburn in the first round of the SEC tournament on Tuesday.
The Wildcats finished the season 30-25 and will likely miss the NCAA tournament with an RPI of 56. Tom leads the team with a .375 batting average and has hit 16 doubles, a triple and five homers with 51 RBIs and 15 stolen bases this season.
» Arkansas second baseman Rick Nomura, a 2012 Punahou graduate, scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Razorbacks a 2-1 win over Tennessee in the first round of the SEC tournament on Tuesday.
Nomura, who drove in Arkansas’ first run on a fielder’s choice, singled with two outs in the ninth before scoring on a walk-off double. The Razorbacks will play Florida on Wednesday.
UH’s Nguyen opens NCAAs against Gumulya
University of Hawaii women’s tennis player Cindy Nguyen will open the first round of the NCAA single’s tournament against Clemson’s Beatrice Gumulya on Wednesday at 8 a.m.
Gumulya is a senior from Jakarta, Indonesia, and finished this season with a overall record of 28-9. She is a two-time All-ACC selection and won 10 of her last 11 matches.
Hori grabs Gatorade girls soccer award
‘Iolani’s Kristen Hori was selected as the 2014-15 Gatorade Hawaii Girls Soccer player of the year, which recognizes outstanding athletic excellence as well as high academic achievement.
The senior scored 14 goals and had 21 assists this season to help lead the Raiders to the Division I state championship game.
Hori has maintained a weighted 4.33 GPA and is a National Merit Scholar. She will attend John Hopkins University in the fall.
The selection makes her a finalist for the Gatorade National Girls Soccer player of the year award, which will be announced in May.
