An Oahu grand jury indicted a 25-year-old Waianae man Thursday for allegedly killing a 3-year-old girl last year.
Joshua Kalili is charged with second-degree murder, two counts of abuse and contempt. His bail is set at $500,000.
Police said Styzilee Reyes-Butay had suspicious injuries on Oct. 21 when she was taken to the hospital, where she died. The Medical Examiner’s Office said the cause of death was blunt impact of the abdomen with intestinal lacerations. The manner of death was ruled homicide.
Prosecutors declined to discuss details of the crime, except to say the girl was the daughter of Kalili’s girlfriend.
Following the grand jury indictment, officers arrested Kalili at his grandparents’ Waianae home Thursday evening.
Prosecutors said the two abuse charges stem from several incidents that occurred a year before the victim died.
Kalili made his initial appearance in Honolulu District Court on Thursday morning on the murder and abuse charges and an outstanding bench warrant dealing with a 2014 traffic citation.
