No good deed goes unpunished?
Let’s hope the solution to enable the delayed, $550 million Honolulu Harbor modernization project doesn’t turn out to be a chain reaction of complex steps taken to achieve a simple task.
The harbor project aims to increase container capacity with a new pier, container yard and 243-foot gantry cranes.
But the cranes’ height drew the Federal Aviation Administration’s concern that in an emergency, an aircraft from nearby Honolulu Airport might not clear them.
That prompted a proposed change in emergency flight patterns — which would then conflict with a 447-foot radio tower near Honolulu Community College.
Now the state plans to spend $5 million to relocate the radio tower.
Still unknown, though, is to where — and what might be needed after that.
Is there an app for avoiding tickets?
It’s hard to miss the irony in last weekend’s "Reboot the Commute" event held in Kakaako.
There is an undeniably good idea, for example, in the efforts of the "Park Carma" team, whose phone app could tap data from the city’s electronic parking meters to help drivers find parking spaces.
But isn’t this a state where there are stiff fines for playing with your cellphone while behind the wheel?
And yet we want our phones to direct us through traffic.
Oh, that’s right. It could be the passenger who is tapping the app.
Either way, Honolulu Police Department officers will be watching, ever more closely.
