A 28-year-old Kailua-Kona woman was critically injured when the moped she was riding was run over Tuesday by a trailer on Hawaii island.
Hawaii County police said the woman was a passenger on a moped when the operator, a 21-year-old Kailua-Kona man, attempted to merge onto the southbound lane of Queen Kaahumanu Highway from Hualalai Road. Police said the moped wound up between a dump truck and the trailer it was pulling.
The trailer ran over the moped at about 10 a.m. Tuesday, police said.
Neither rider was wearing a helmet, police said.
Police said the woman suffered critical head injuries and was taken to Kona Community Hospital. The moped driver suffered minor injuries, and the truck driver was unhurt, police said.
Police have opened a negligent injury investigation into the crash.
Motorcycle rider injured in Kaneohe crash
A passenger on a motorcycle that crashed at Kahekili and Likelike highways Monday morning was reported in serious condition.
Emergency Medical Services personnel said a 57-year-old woman was not wearing a helmet and received multiple injuries. The accident occurred about 9:06 a.m.
No further information was available.
