The University of Hawaii women’s sailing team ended its season Tuesday with a 13th-place finish in its division in the semifinals of the Intercollegiate Sailing Association Sperry Women’s Nationals at Newport, R.I.
The Rainbow Wahine finished with 308 points over 13 races held over two days. Dartmouth led the division with 98 points. The top nine teams in the two semifinal divisions advanced to the national finals.
UH’s "A" division team of Louise Currie, Elizabeth Boystak and Cole Brauer peaked with an eighth-place finish in the 12th race of the semis. The B division team of Caitlin Schadt, Madeline Anzivino and Kate Berry had two top-nine finishes. Both teams ended the regatta with 154 points.
UH will also compete in the Gill Coed Nationals starting Sunday.
Santi earns academic honors at UCSB
UC Santa Barbara senior setter Ali Santi, a 2011 Punahou graduate, received the Golden Eagle Award and was named a Ring Winner for leading both her women’s volleyball team and UCSB student-athletes with a 3.93 GPA.
"Ali Santi being named the Ring Winner for the second straight year is an incredible honor and a great way for her to finish off her Gaucho career," coach Nicole Lantagne Welch said on the school’s website.
5 isle gymnasts receive scholar awards
Five collegiate gymnasts from Hawaii received special recognition and Scholar-Athlete awards from their respective conferences.
University of Oklahoma junior Josh Yee (Myron Thompson Academy 2012) was named a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation All-Academic Scholar Athlete and was also recognized as an All-Big 12 Academic honoree. He has a 3.23 GPA and is majoring in health exercise science.
Stanford junior Jenna Frowein (Punahou 2012) was named to the Pac-12 All-Academic first team and also received the Academic Award for the gymnastics team. She has a 3.94 GPA and is majoring in architecture.
Michigan State senior Carson Tabiolo (Moanalua 2011), received the "Highest Honors Award" at the Spartan Academic Excellence Gala. She has a GPA of 3.85 and is majoring in psychology.
Seattle Pacific sophomores Tracie Villanueva (Moanalua 2013) and Kristi Hayashida (Home Schooled, 2013) were named MPSF All-Academic Scholar-Athletes for 2015.
Hayashida has a 3.53 GPA and is majoring in applied human biology; Villanueva, also majoring in applied human biology, has a 3.41 GPA .
