29 women seeking title of Miss Hawaii
Twenty-nine young women will vie for the crown in the Miss Hawaii Scholarship Pageant on Saturday at the Hawai‘i Convention Center, with the winner to represent Hawaii in the Miss America contest in September.
The pageant will be broadcast live on OC16 starting at 7 p.m. Hawaii News Now “Sunrise” co-host Steve Uyehara will be emceeing, assisted by former Miss Hawaii Malika Dudley, who will cover the backstage drama. Entertainment includes Ho‘okena, Maila & Ben, and 24-VII Danceforce.
The nontelevised preshow festivities at 6 p.m. will feature the “anniversary” performances by former winners Roberta Conlan (50th year), Cheryl Toma Sanders (25th year) and Dudley (10th year).

New waxing center offers free services
New female customers can get a free lip, eyebrow or bikini waxing service at thenewly opened European Wax Center — the first chain’s Hawaii location — in the Pearl Highlands Center. For men, the deal covers ear, eyebrow or nose waxing. The center offers 55 different waxing treatments in full-privacy “wax suites.”
The national chain was founded a decade ago. In the past five years, it has expanded from six to more than 600 locations across the country, according to a news release. David Pang, regional developer for Hawaii, said he and his partners plan to open a total of four European Wax Centers on Oahu in the coming years.
