Oregon shortstop Mark Karaviotis (Maui, 2013) had a career-high four hits and scored three runs to help the Ducks stay alive in the NCAA tournament with a 12-6 win over Canisius in an elimination game in the Springfield (Mo.) Regional on Saturday.
Karaviotis, who was also hit by a pitch, finished 4-for-4 and stole two bases. The three runs scored matched a career high.
He’s 5-for-7 with four runs scored in two games for Oregon, which will play Iowa in an elimination game at 9 a.m. on Sunday. If the Ducks win, they will play Missouri State at 2 p.m. to force a winner-take-all game on Monday.
Both starting second basemen in the winner’s bracket game in the Stillwater (Okla.) Regional were from Hawaii, as Rick Nomura helped Arkansas to a 7-5 win over host Oklahoma State on Saturday.
Nomura (Punahou, ’12) went 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI for the Razorbacks, who only need to win one of their next two games to advance to a Super Regional.
Cowboys second baseman Tim Arakawa (Moanalua, ’11) hit a solo homer and finished 1-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored.
Oklahoma State will face St. John’s on Sunday at 8 a.m. in an elimination game.
Both games in the Dallas Regional were postponed a day, meaning Oregon State freshmen Christian Donahue (‘Iolani, ’14) and K.J. Harrison (Punahou, ’14) will wait until 11 a.m. Sunday to face VCU in a winner’s bracket game.
Pepperdine stayed alive in the Fullerton (Calif.) Regional with a 10-8 win over Clemson to eliminate the Tigers.
Senior Kolten Yamaguchi (Konawaena, ’11) entered the game as a designated hitter in the seventh inning and drew a walk for the Waves. He also laid down a sacrifice bunt in the ninth inning.
