The Kauai Police Department is accepting applications for its Police Explorer program, which is open to young people interested in a law enforcement career.

The program is open to people who are at least 14 years old and have completed the eighth grade through age 20. High school students must have at least a “C” average in school, and applicants must be committed to attending monthly meetings and activities throughout the year, the department said in a news release Tuesday.

Activities will include patrol ride-alongs, physical fitness, rappelling and community service, as well as training in self-defense, criminal investigations, traffic control and many other areas, according to the department.
