You will see Luke Donald, Ryo Ishikawa, Retief Goosen and Tony Finau at the 115th U.S. Open, June 18-21 at Chambers Bay, Wash. You won’t see anyone from Hawaii.
The 10 U.S. Sectionals were played Monday. Hawaii pros Sam Cyr (72-73) and Garrett Okamura (72-76) failed to advance, nor did amateur Jun Ho Won (79-78).
All three played at Big Canyon and Newport Beach Country Clubs, in California. The field of 112 was vying for six spots, with the last qualifier finishing at 5-under-par 138.
A total of 58 advanced to the Open on Monday, including Donald, Ishikawa, Goosen and Finau. Nick Watney, Robert Allenby, Rory Sabbatini, Steve Stricker and Vijay Singh failed to move on.
Qualifiers were also held in Japan and England May 25, with 16 more advancing — a group that did not include three-time major champion Padraig Harrington.
Approximately 50 golfers are exempt for the Open. The rest of the field of 156 qualifies, with almost 10,000 entering this year.
State women’s tournament to include handicap play
Next week’s Hawaii State Women’s Golf Association Match Play Championship will have a new look. For the first time since it started in 1924, golfers will play with handicaps.
Only one of this year’s entrants plays to a single-digit handicap — top seed Mira Han, who is a 7. She gets a bye in Wednesday morning’s first round at Oahu Country Club, with the other 14 teeing off at 7 a.m.
Quarterfinals and semifinals are next Thursday, with the final at 7 a.m. next Friday.
HGRA Sample Sale to be held Saturday
The Hawaii Golf Representatives Association Sample Sale is Saturday, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Washington Intermediate cafeteria (1633 S. King St.).
Golf shirts, shoes and equipment will be featured.
