Hawaiian Airlines has its mojo back.
The state’s largest carrier was first in April for on-time performance among U.S. carriers for the second straight month after slipping a notch in December, January and February. Hawaiian’s domestic flights arrived on schedule 92.7 percent of the time, easily exceeding the national average of 81.8 percent, according to data released Thursday by the U.S. Department of Transportation. A flight is considered on time if it lands less than 15 minutes after its scheduled arrival.
In other categories, Hawaiian ranked first in fewest flight cancellations with 0.2 percent, or 11 overall, out of 6,093 flights; third for fewest consumer complaints with 0.63 per 100,000 customers; and fourth for fewest mishandled-baggage reports with 2.05 per 1,000 passengers.

U.S. jobless aid applications remain low
WASHINGTON » The number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits rose slightly last week yet remained at a historically low level that points to a healthy job market.
The Labor Department said Thursday that weekly applications for jobless aid increased 2,000 to a seasonally adjusted 279,000. The four-week average, a less volatile measure, rose 3,750 to 278,750.
Even with the increases, both figures remain at very low levels. The average fell to a 15-year low last month. Applications are a proxy for layoffs, so the figures suggest that few Americans are losing their jobs.
Household wealth hits high of $85 trillion
WASHINGTON » A rising stock market and climbing home prices boosted Americans’ net worth to a new high in the first three months of the year.
The Federal Reserve said Thursday that the value of Americans’ stock holdings, real estate and other assets rose to $84.9 trillion from $83.3 trillion in the final three months of last year. Stock portfolios rose $487 billion, home values by $503 billion. Still, households remained cautious about borrowing. Total household debt, which includes mortgages, credit cards, auto loans and other borrowing, rose 2.2 percent, the slowest pace since the end of 2013.
Retail sales jump as confidence grows
WASHINGTON » Americans stepped up their spending at retailers in May, especially for autos, clothes and building materials, in a sign that strong job growth has begun to boost store sales. Retail sales rose a seasonally adjusted
1.2 percent after a 0.2 percent gain in April, the Commerce Department said Thursday. Over the past 12 months, sales have risen a solid 2.7 percent.
The upswing in shopping reflects greater confidence in an economy still shaking off the ravages of a recession that officially ended six years ago. Employers have added more than 3 million jobs over the past year. Yet until last month many workers appeared to be saving as much of their paychecks as they could.
