Hawaii bridge players will join a national effort to raise money for Alzheimer’s disease research by playing the card game all day, Sunday at the Ala Wai Club House.

The fundraiser, called The Longest Day, is expected to draw teams from 160 bridge clubs across the country, according to the American Contract Bridge League, which is organizing the event with the Alzheimer’s Association.

Held on the summer solstice, The Longest Day symbolizes the challenging journey of those living with Alzheimer’s disease.

The event raised more than $1 million in the past two years. This year’s goal is $600,000.

The event runs from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The $72 entry fee includes two bridge sessions, snacks, drinks and dessert. Interested teams can register that morning.

Card games such as bridge have been found to help older people better retain their mental sharpness, according to a study released last year by the Wisconsin Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center.
